European Allowances (EUA) also known as an emissions certificate or emissions allowance. Each certificate entitles the holder to emit one tonne of CO₂ or one CO₂ equivalent over a specific period. Certificates are initially distributed free of charge by the government; however, any additional requirements must be purchased on the market.
