Digital euro: The European Central Bank (ECB) is analysing the introduction of a digital central bank currency for the euro area, which would be issued by the Eurosystem (the ECB and the national central banks of the euro area). The so-called digital euro is intended to be available to individuals and businesses as a complement to cash, thereby offering more payment options. The decision on whether to launch the ‘digital euro’ project is to be taken by mid-2021 at the latest. (Publication date 22.03.2021)
